Dimensional weight (DIM weight) is the weight a carrier assigns to a parcel based on the space it occupies rather than what it weighs. Carriers bill the greater of actual and dimensional weight, which is why a light parcel in a large box can cost three times what the scale suggests. The formula is volume divided by a divisor: 139 for UPS and FedEx domestic in inches, 166 for USPS, and 5,000–6,000 for centimetre-based international services.
