CBM Calculator

Carton volume in cubic metres, total shipment CBM and how many cartons fit in a container.

Quick answer: CBM = length × width × height in metres. A 60 × 40 × 35 cm carton is 0.084 CBM; 120 of them are 10.08 CBM, which is about a third of a 20ft container (28 CBM usable).

Lighter than 1,000 kg/CBM: sea freight will bill by CBM — you are paying for space, not weight.

CBM (cubic metre) = length × width × height in metres. 1 CBM = 1,000,000 cm³, and sea freight quotes are usually per CBM with a minimum charge of 1 CBM.

What is CBM Calculator?

CBM stands for cubic metre and is the unit sea freight is sold in. One CBM is 1,000,000 cubic centimetres, so a carton of 60 × 40 × 35 cm takes 0.084 CBM and a 120-carton shipment takes 10.08 CBM. That figure is what your forwarder quotes against, what determines whether you ship LCL or a full container, and what tells you if your cargo is heavy enough to be billed by weight instead of volume. Lose ten centimetres of empty space per carton across a thousand cartons and you have paid for several cubic metres of air; this calculator shows exactly what the current packing produces.

Common Uses for CBM Calculator

  • Get a sea freight quote from a forwarder who asks for total CBM
  • Decide between LCL and a 20ft container for a shipment
  • Check whether a new carton size reduces shipping cost per unit
  • Compare packing layouts before the factory runs production
  • Confirm cargo density to know whether weight or volume will be billed

Why packing density decides your freight bill

At $95 per CBM, 10.08 CBM costs $958. Repacking the same 120 cartons into 55 × 38 × 32 cm boxes gives 8.02 CBM and $762 — a 20% saving with no supplier negotiation. Volume is the one freight cost you can engineer before the goods ever move.

LCL or full container

Rules of thumb: under 12 CBM, LCL; 12–15 CBM, compare carefully; over 15 CBM, a 20ft container is usually cheaper and far faster to clear. The container capacity column in the calculator gives the carton counts behind those thresholds.

Volumetric weight is not just air freight

Sea freight uses CBM, air freight uses volumetric kilos (cm³ ÷ 6,000) and parcel carriers use dimensional weight (in³ ÷ 139). The same shipment can be billed three different ways — the calculator returns density so you can predict which method will apply.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate CBM?
Multiply length × width × height in metres. For centimetres, multiply the three dimensions and divide by 1,000,000. A 50 × 40 × 30 cm carton is 60,000 cm³, or 0.06 CBM.
How many CBM fit in a container?
A 20ft container holds roughly 28 CBM usable, a 40ft about 58 CBM and a 40ft high cube about 68 CBM. The theoretical volumes are larger (33 and 67 CBM), but pallets, loading gaps and door height always consume space.
What is the minimum charge for sea freight?
Most LCL quotes carry a 1 CBM minimum with a minimum charge per shipment. Below about 12–15 CBM, LCL is normally cheaper than a container; above roughly 15 CBM a 20ft container often wins on total cost.
Does 1 CBM equal 1,000 kg?
It is a convention, not physics. Forwarders compare volume and weight using 1 CBM = 1,000 kg (or 1 revenue tonne). If your cargo is denser than that, you are billed by weight; if lighter, you are billed by volume.
Should I include pallets in the CBM?
Yes. Palletised cargo is measured at the pallet footprint and height, not the carton dimensions, and a standard pallet adds 10–15 cm of height plus the pallet itself. Ask the warehouse for the loaded pallet dimensions if the shipment travels that way.
